Where is Maldives? The Maldives lies in two rows of atolls in the Indian Ocean, just across the equator.
Where is Maldives and how is Maldives formed? The Maldives is a chain of 1200 tiny islands that are geographically dispersed in to ring shaped atolls comprising 26, stretched over 750km. An atoll encloses a lagoon and a reef with a central lagoon which is approximately 40-100m deep. The islands are formed on the outer ridge of the reef where water travels in and out through the natural channels. Out of the 1200 islands, about 200 of them are inhabited by local residents. In addition to this, over 90 islands are developed as resorts and leased out for tourism-related activities. Almost 99% of Maldives is covered by the ocean, thus the people of the country are dispersed over different parts of the country.
